How to stay safe if you’re walking alone at night
It’s that time of year again. The clocks go back at the weekend and the days are getting shorter. If you have to walk home in the dark there are precautions you can take to keep yourself safe.
Plan ahead
Make sure you know the route you’re taking and try to avoid any unfamiliar areas. Try to avoid short cuts and stick to well-lit main roads. If possible, book a taxi or arrange a lift with friends in advance to avoid walking somewhere you don’t know.
Walk with others
There is safety in numbers, if you know others going in the same direction try to time your walks so you can stay together.
Be alert
Don’t get distracted looking at your phone while you’re walking, not only will you be unaware of any potential attackers but not looking while crossing the road is one of the main reasons people get knocked over. Walk facing the traffic so you can see what’s coming, and be seen.
Be confident
Walk at a steady pace, keep your eyes up and don’t look like you’re scared or timid. If you get lost, don’t spend time wandering around make your way to an area with people and ask for directions. Look for security staff outside pubs and ask them for help if you need to.
Keep your keys ready
Don’t leave them at the bottom of your bag, it’s an easy opportunity for someone to attack you when you’re distracted hunting through your belongings.
Keep your phone charged
Use the torch app for some extra lighting if you’re in a poorly lit area. Call friends or family to let them know where you are and when you’re walking home, or send them your location.
Carry an alarm
Get a personal alarms or whistles to carry with you. It can make you feel safer and if necessary, will deter a potential attacker.
